Newcomer of the year Holger Rune to 50th ABN AMRO Open

16 December 2022

Holger Rune, the ATP newcomer of the year, will attend the 50th ABN AMRO Open in February. The 19-year-old Dane, winner of three tournaments this year, will make his debut in Rotterdam Ahoy. The anniversary edition of the tournament will be held from 11 to 19 February 2023.

Tournament director Richard Krajicek: "The ABN AMRO Open likes to let young talents compete against the established order. In the case of Holger Rune, you might wonder which category he falls into. After all, as a 19-year-old, he is already 11th in the ATP ranking. The fact that Holger Rune was named Newcomer of the Year by his peers says a lot. It is a nice reward for the tremendous progress he made this year."

Year of the breakthrough

For Holger Rune, 2022 is the year of his breakthrough. Thanks to three ATP titles, he was already in the top-10 for a while. His finest tournament victory was the ATP Masters 1000 in Paris. En route to the title, he beat no less than five top-10 players (Alcaraz, Djokovic, Auger-Aliassime, Rublev and Hurkacz). The win caused a huge jump in the rankings for the young Dane, who was still outside the top-100 at the beginning of the year.

It earned him the honorary title 'ATP Newcomer of the Year'. An award he receives on the recommendation of his peers. "I am super happy to have been awarded 'Newcomer of the Year', this means a lot," said Holger Rune. "I worked really hard all year to do the best I could, and it's really nice to see that my fellow peers voted for me, this means a lot to me. I just can't wait for 2023 and hopefully it will be another great year."

Debut in Rotterdam

Holger Rune will make his debut at the ABN AMRO Open. He will face fierce competition in Rotterdam Ahoy. Earlier, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev were already announced.

Richard Krajicek: "It's great that Rune will play in Rotterdam. He is one of the players tennis fans will enjoy in the coming years. And in Paris he has already shown that he can also win from the greats."
