Haase and Middelkoop claim the doubles title

13 February 2022

Matwé Middelkoop and Robin Haase have won the doubles title of the 49th edition of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. The Dutch duo defeated Lloyd Harris and Tim Puetz in an exciting final: 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-5.

"I have no idea how we won this final," said a very happy Matwé Middelkoop on the center court. "I'm definitely going to watch that match again. We had been given a wildcard for this tournament and I was like 'I want to be on that ring with all the winners'.”

Middelkoop (38) was once a ball boy in Ahoy at the age of eleven in the semifinal of Paul Haarhuis against Yevgeny Kafelnikov. "Let this be an example for all children. Keep chasing your dream. You can see it here. From ball boy to tournament winner."

Robin Haase (34) competed in the Australian Open doubles final in 2013 with Igor Sijsling and won his seventh doubles title on the ATP Tour in Ahoy. "But this one is the most beautiful. Such a tournament in our own country. Rotterdam is really the very best indoor tournament in the world."

The last Dutch doubles winner in Ahoy was Jean-Julien Rojer, who took the title in 2015 with the Romanian Horia Tecau. Paul Haarhuis and Jacco Eltingh were the last Dutch duo to triumph in the Maasstad in 1998.
