Impact on top of tennis

At the ABN AMRO Open, we are dedicated to creating a future-proof tournament. Sustainability, inclusion, and accessibility are at the heart of everything we do. From energy conservation and material reuse to initiatives that make tennis accessible to all, we take responsibility and create impact together with our partners. By working together, we ensure that the ABN AMRO Open is not only a top-tier event for tennis fans but also an inspiration for positive change.

New Initiatives?

The ABN AMRO Open organization is always open to new ideas and innovations. Do you have an initiative that could help us make great strides? Submit your idea via [email protected].

Inclusion

Esther Vergeer Foundation Sports Festival

More than 300 children who already play sports through the Esther Vergeer Foundation - or who don’t yet - are invited to the Sports Festival. They get to discover new sports, inspired by well-known sporting heroes. Come and take a look on Saturday 14 February at Sportsplaza.

ABN AMRO Foundation

Since 2001, the ABN AMRO Foundation has been committed to supporting children and young people growing up in less advantaged circumstances. Six hundred children are given the opportunity to visit the ABN AMRO Open. It starts with a first introduction to tennis through two tennis lessons at school, followed by the real deal: a full day at the tournament. At Rotterdam Ahoy, the children take part in various tennis activities and watch a world-class match live. Children who discover a passion for the sport are supported by ABN AMRO, with help from the Youth Fund for Sport & Culture, to join a local tennis club.

Coalitie Erbij Rotterdam

Coalitie Erbij Rotterdam connects organisations and professionals who strengthen social involvement among the people of Rotterdam. Together, we tackle loneliness and social isolation by offering two hundred visitors a day out at the ABN AMRO Open. With an extra sporty twist, of course - because they also get to take part themselves in one of the many clinics.

ABN AMRO Open Radio

New this year, and specially designed for visitors with a visual impairment, is ABN AMRO Open Radio. On Friday, all matches are provided with live commentary, which can be listened to via a personal phone and earphones. This way, everyone can fully experience the tournament.

Youth Work

Together with the City Marine and Sportbedrijf Rotterdam, we invite 200 young people from Rotterdam to visit the tournament alongside their youth workers. The aim is to inspire them to get active in sports and feel proud of their own city.

Read-Aloud Function

Since 2024, the tournament’s website has been fully accessible for visually impaired users. Information such as match schedules, ticket sales, and accessibility details can now be read aloud using the ReadSpeaker function in the top right corner. This ensures that everyone, regardless of visual impairments, has full access to all tournament information and can easily plan their visit.

Low-Stimulation Room

The low-stimulation room has been created for visitors who need a moment of rest, with a special focus on those who are sensitive to sensory stimuli. The room features soft lighting, soundproofing, and comfortable seating to provide a calm and relaxing environment.

Accessibility

Tickets for the Ticketbank

Since 2025, the ABN AMRO Open has donated tickets to the Ticketbank, enabling clients of the Rotterdam Food Bank to visit the tournament free of charge. Through this collaboration, we aim to make the tournament accessible to a broader audience and give people facing financial challenges the opportunity to experience the atmosphere and excitement of the ABN AMRO Open.

Accessibility for People with Disabilities

Special measures have been taken to enhance accessibility for people with disabilities at the ABN AMRO Open.

Sustainability

Energy and water conservation at Rotterdam Ahoy

At Ahoy, the venue of the ABN AMRO Open, we make sustainable events possible through smart investments in LED lighting, efficient cooling and climate systems, thermal energy storage (heat and cold), solar panels, a sedum green roof, and a water buffer. We reduce our energy demand by focusing on airtightness, solar shading, optimal use of daylight, and continuous monitoring through energy meters.

We also actively save water: rainwater is stored underground on our site and reused, for example for window cleaning. This relieves pressure on the sewer system and helps prevent flooding. The 4.8-hectare water buffer can capture up to 2,400 m³ of water during heavy rainfall.

Reusable Bottles

All players and coaches are provided with reusable Waterdrop bottles. Disposable bottles are not allowed on the courts. In the first year of the ATP and Waterdrop partnership in 2023, more than 1.6 tons of plastic was saved. The universal bottle features vacuum insulation, keeping drinks cold for 24 hours or warm for six hours.

Sustainable Player Benches

During the ABN AMRO Open 2024, we introduced a special innovation: sustainable player benches, a concept developed by Reinier de Jong of design studio STILTS in Rotterdam. These benches are not just new pieces of furniture on the sidelines; they represent a thoughtful combination of sustainability and promoting mental stability among players. What makes these benches unique is the use of old jackets from ABN AMRO staff as upholstery.
