Andy Murray fourth former winner in the 50th ABN AMRO Open

06 January 2023

Three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray will take part in the 50th ABN AMRO Open in February. The winner of the tournament in 2009, will be in action for the eighth time in Rotterdam Ahoy. The anniversary edition of the tournament will be held from 11 to 19 February 2023.

Tournament director Richard Krajicek: "There are few players who can point to a list of honours like Andy Murray's. Not only his three Grand Slam titles, but certainly his two Olympic gold medals make him unique. We are proud to greet this icon again at the ABN AMRO Open. Especially considering how he fought his way back after his hip surgery, it is a privilege to see him still in action."

Grand Slams and Olympic Gold

Andy Murray has recorded no less than 46 tournament victories in his career so far. The Wimbledon title in 2013, as the first male Briton after Fred Perry in 1936, gave him iconic status. He confirmed this by becoming the only tennis player ever to win Olympic Gold in singles twice in a row, London 2012 and Rio 2016. 2016 was his peak year, in which he won Wimbledon for the second time and also reached the No 1 position in the ATP Ranking.

Winner in Rotterdam

After Felix Auger-Aliassime, Andrey Rublev and Stan Wawrinka, the 35-year-old Murray is the fourth former winner in action this year. He has been on the winners' ring in Ahoy since 2009, when he beat Rafael Nadal in the final. During his last two participations, he lost both times in the second round to the eventual tournament winner, Rublev in 2021 and Auger-Aliassime in 2022.

Wheelchair tournament

Besides Andy Murray, the participation of Ruben Spaargaren in Rotterdam was also announced today. The number 1 of the Netherlands and number 8 of the world in wheelchair tennis, will make his fourth appearance at the ABN AMRO Open.
