Gaël Monfils on the hunt for record in 50th ABN AMRO Open

13 January 2023

Gaël Monfils will play at the 50th ABN AMRO Open. The Frenchman, who managed to win the last two editions he participated in (2019 and 2020), will be on the hunt for a unique record in Rotterdam Ahoy. He could become the first player in history to win the tournament in three consecutive participations. The anniversary edition of the tournament will be held from 11 to 19 February 2023.

Tournament director Richard Krajicek: "Gaël Monfils is known for his extremely spectacular tennis. It turned out that his game is very much at its best in Rotterdam. The past two years he suffered from injuries, so he didn't play much. But we are happy that he will resume competition with us. Just like that, he could deliver another surprise."

Two titles in Rotterdam

Gaël Monfils is one of eight players who managed to win the ABN AMRO Open more than once. Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors, Stefan Edberg, Richard Krajicek, Nicolas Escudé, and Robin Söderling also won the tournament twice. Roger Federer is the record holder with three titles. If Monfils wins the tournament in 2023, he will match this achievement. Moreover, he will then be the first player to win fifteen matches in a row in Rotterdam Ahoy.

Tenth participation

It is the tenth time Gaël Monfils can be seen at the ABN AMRO Open. He made his debut in 2007, losing in the first round against Dennis van Scheppingen. This happened to him again in 2013 and 2014, both times against Juan Martin del Potro. Twice, the quarter-finals were his finish line, in 2010 and 2015, once the semi-finals. In his last three participations, he always reached the final. In 2016, Monfils still had to bow to Martin Klizan, but in 2019 and 2020 he proved the strongest, against Stan Wawrinka and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Wildcard

Gaël Monfils will receive a wildcard to participate in the ABN AMRO Open. As announced earlier, Tim van Rijthoven and Andy Murray will also receive a wildcard. Other players already announced are: Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Daniil Medvedev, Holger Rune, Botic van de Zandschulp and Stan Wawrinka.
