Daniil Medvedev unable to defend Rotterdam title
05 February 2024The winner of the 50th ABN AMRO Open, Daniil Medvedev, will not defend his title during the tournament starting next Saturday. The Australian Open finalist has not recovered sufficiently from his efforts Down Under to have a chance to win the ABN AMRO Open again.
Daniil Medvedev came to that conclusion when he started his preparations for Rotterdam. The record number of sets he played during the 24 hours and 17 minutes he was on court in Melbourne appear to have taken their toll.
Daniil Medvedev: "Unfortunately I have to pull out of Rotterdam. After an incredibly tough and long run in Australia my body (and especially my right foot) is not recovered enough yet to play come and defend my title. I love playing in Rotterdam, have a long history with the event, and look forward to coming back in 2025.”
Tournament director Richard Krajicek: "We have all seen the efforts Daniil has made in Australia. The fact that these stand in the way of his participation is a great shame for both him and us. We look forward to seeing him back in the future.”
Jannik Sinner top seed
With the loss of Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner becomes the top seed of the ABN AMRO Open. The Australian Open champion will face strong competition from Andrey Rublev, Holger Rune and Hubert Hurkacz, among others.
