FORMER CHAMPION AUGER-ALIASSIME RETURNS TO ABN AMRO OPEN
18 October 2023FORMER CHAMPION AUGER-ALIASSIME RETURNS TO ABN AMRO OPEN
The winner of the ABN AMRO Open 2022, Felix Auger-Aliassime, will also participate in Rotterdam in 2024. The Canadian, currently ranked number seventeen in the world, won his very first ATP tournament in Rotterdam. The ABN AMRO Open will take place in Rotterdam Ahoy from February 10 to 18, 2024.
Tournament director Richard Krajicek: "The bond between Felix Auger-Aliassime and the ABN AMRO Open is very strong. As a 17-year-old top talent, he played his first match with us. It was his debut in a main draw on the ATP Tour. Later he fulfilled that promise with great performances. He is one of the examples of our philosophy of providing opportunities for national and international top talents."
Top talent Auger-Aliassime
The current world number 17 had his definitive breakthrough in 2019, when he reached the top 100. In no time, he was one of the world's best 20 players. He became the youngest top-25 player since Lleyton Hewitt. His rise stalled temporarily, but with a semifinal spot at the 2021 US Open, he took the next step towards the top. He now has four ATP titles to his name and reached the final of an ATP tournament nine times. Krajicek: "Felix is the type of player who sometimes has a readjusting period, but always comes out of it better. 2023 is not his best year. For me it is not a question however if he will return to the top-10, but when."
Auger-Aliassime in Rotterdam
Felix Auger-Aliassime made five previous appearances in Rotterdam. On his debut in 2018, he had to bow to Krajinovic in the first round after three sets. On his return in 2020, he reached the final, in which Gaƫl Monfils proved too strong. After his first-round loss in 2021 against Nishikori, he returned in 2022 to capture the title. After beating Gerasimov, Murray, Norrie and Rublev, he faced Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. This allowed Auger-Aliassime to call himself tournament winner for the first time in his career. Earlier this year, the quarter-finals proved to be his endpoint. He lost to the later tournament winner Daniel Medvedev.
