MARTIN DE LA PUENTE AS FAVORITE TO FINALS

09 February 2025

If you can pinpoint at all a favorite for the men's final of the ABN AMRO Open wheelchair tournament, you end up with Martin de la Puente. Like his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, he is the number three seed in the world. And like Alcaraz, he leads the list at the ABN AMRO Open.

But with Stephane Houdet, a surprise is always lurking. Tom Egberink and Gordon Reid already experienced that this week. The experienced professional, who already played in the first edition of the wheelchair tournament in 2009, has won the title twice in Rotterdam Ahoy. In 2010 and 2019, he got to hold the trophy in the air.

Still, De la Puente seems to have the advantage. The last two times De la Puente and Houdet met, the young Spaniard invariably drew the longest straw.

Houdet and De la Puente battle for the top prize today at 1 p.m. in the Wheelchair Arena.

That titanic battle will be followed by the final event of the wheelchair tennis tournament: the women's doubles final. Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot will take on Colombian/English pair Angelica Bernal/Lucy Shuker.

The men's doubles already had its final today. Tom Egberink was cheering in the doubles. At the side of his Belgian partner Joachim Gerard he won the final match against the Spanish/French pair Caverzaschi/Houdet.
