ALFIE HEWETT RETURNS TO THE ABN AMRO OPEN
09 January 2026Wheelchair tennis legend Alfie Hewett will return to the ABN AMRO Open next month. Hewett is the outright record holder with no fewer than five singles titles in the wheelchair tennis tournament, which is held alongside the ATP 500 event at Rotterdam Ahoy. The multiple Grand Slam and Paralympic champion was absent in 2025, but will be back in action in February.
Tournament director Esther Vergeer: "The fact that Alfie Hewett is back this year is fantastic news for the ABN AMRO Open. He is a player who can already be regarded as a legend during his active career. With singles and doubles titles at all Grand Slams, as well as Paralympic silver in singles and gold in doubles, he has proven that he belongs among the very greatest players our sport has ever seen.”
Alfie Hewett in Rotterdam
Alfie Hewett made his debut at the ABN AMRO Open in 2014 at the age of 17. Success in Rotterdam, one of the strongest tournaments on the annual calendar, took a few years to follow. In 2018 he reached the final for the first time, losing to Gustavo Fernandez. Two years later, he did claim the title. In 2020 he won his first championship against compatriot Gordon Reid. That marked the beginning of an exceptional run, with tournament victories in 2021 (again a final against Reid), 2022 (Fernandez), 2023 (De La Puente) and 2024 (Gerard). In addition to his singles success, Hewett has been a mainstay at the very top of the world rankings in doubles for many years.
Esther Vergeer added: "That he can return after missing the 2025 edition is great news for tennis fans—especially considering that Diede de Groot is also back after a year’s absence. Together, they give a tremendous boost to the ABN AMRO Open.”
